Pubmed has recently changed a few items in the search pages as well as MyNCBI. These changes will be reflected in the library’s Using PubMed help sheet.

Here is a summary of the recent changes

PubMed Home Page
The homepage will also include a link to the Clipboard (to temporarily save citations) if citations have been add.

Limits Related Changes
The Limits page is now available from a link above the search box on all PubMed pages, including the PubMed homepage. Click here for an illustration (Figure 1). More information about Limits may be found through Using PubMed and PubMed Help – Limits.

Search results page
The Limits Activated message is now directly above the results summary line on search results, and under the search box on the homepage and Advanced Search page. Click here for an illustration (Figure 3).
When one selects limits for a search, the limits will remain for any search in the same PubMed search session. The Limits Activated message is a good reminder of limits that are activated. The limits may be deactivated by clicking on the associated “Remove” button.

Advanced Search (examples here in figures 4, 5, and 6 )
**On the Advanced Search page, a Search Builder replaces the Search by Author, Journal, Publication Date, and more and Index of Fields and Field Values sections. One may add search boxes by clicking on AND, OR, or NOT underneath the search box.

** The Limit by Topics, Languages, and Journal Groups section was removed — replaced by the new Limits page. The Limits page is accessible through any search results page (listing of citations) as well as the Change link in Limits Activated.

**Publication date limits may be entered in either the Limits page or through Search Builder.

My NCBI recent changes
My NCBI users can now turn off the Search details on PubMed search results pages. Under My NCBI Preferences, click the Search Details link. Select On or Off, and click Save.
This option is especially useful in displaying and saving PubMed results without specific search details as MeSH subject headings.

Please do not hesitate to contact Mulford Reference Assistance with any questions.
Remember that we have PubMed sessions, but are happy to provide tutorials on PubMed (as well as any database we have access to), and perform literature searches (details here).

Elsevier recently announced that all research articles in its flagship collection of Cell Press journals will be published online in the new Article of the Future format on www.cell.com.

The University of Toledo Libraries subscribes to eleven (11) Cell Press journals, including Cancer Cell and Current Biology.
Each title is linked to both a subscription through OhioLINK and an archived based subsription through Cell Press.|
The subscription through OhioLINK version does not include Article of the Future.
The subscription through Cell Press only includes articles up to 1 year ago. It is unclear at this time if the Cell Press subscription will include the feature Article of the Future. Stay tuned for further developments!

However, In celebration of the launch and to encourage user feedback, Article of the Future articles are accessible for free for Cell Press’ flagship title, Cell, on External link www.cell.com, for the first four issues of 2010. (These articles are also available through through any of the titles at the University of Toledo Libraries catalog item for Cell Press Journals).

Successful ideas from this project are planned to be rolled-out across Elsevier’s portfolio of 2,000 journals available on ScienceDirect, the world’s largest scientific, technical and medical database.

One of the key features of Article of the Future functionality is a tabbed navigation structure through the Introduction, Results, Figures and Discussion sections.
Readers will also experience a graphical abstract and a highlights section on the landing page of each article, complimenting the abstract text by creating a quickly reviewable visual summary and bullet points. Selected articles take advantage of integrated multimedia by featuring PaperFlicks, a video tour of an article’s content.

Here are links to several Articles of the Future:

ChEMBLdb, a vast online database of information on the properties and activities of drugs and drug-like small molecules and their targets, launches today with information on over half a million compounds. The data lie at the heart of translating information from the human genome into successful new drugs in the clinic.

The database is hosted by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). It was transferred from biotech firm Galapagos NV in July 2008 through a £4.7 million Strategic Award from the Wellcome Trust.

ChEMBLdb is a unique resource because of its focus on drug discovery and its size: information on an additional 100,000 compounds has been added to the database for its launch, taking the number of small molecules to over 520,000, and it contains over 2.4 million records of their effects on biological systems. The data include information about how small molecules bind to their targets, how these compounds affect cells and whole organisms, and information on the molecules’ absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity.
